Winter on the North Coast

Winter on the North Coast

The north coast of California is a place of wonder and beauty. Most people know there are redwood forests and breathtaking ocean vistas here. What many might not realize is that Del Norte and Humboldt counties are treasure troves of wildlife viewing. Elk, sea lions, river otters, bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and white-tailed kites are but a few of the wildlife species commonly seen here.

After spending last winter in the desert, this winter I was drawn back to the Pacific coast of northern California. The deserts of New Mexico, Arizona and southern California have their charm, for sure, but the Pacific Northwest calls to me like no other region I’ve visited.

Although it’s been wet and chilly sometimes, most days there is nowhere I’d rather be. And all the rain has helped me track down the leaks in my RV!

According to many of the animals I’ve observed over the last few months, the fishing here is really good! From seals and sea lions catching steelhead to otters catching flounder and shorebirds catching tiny baitfish, the food chain is truly on display.

If you travel to the north coast of California to enjoy the beautiful sights, make sure you take time to notice the creatures that make these incredible places their home.

As humans, we sometimes get caught up in the beauty and grandeur of a landscape, while forgetting that it’s also a habitat for other living things. And, at other times, we notice nature’s diverse assortment of beings and forget the habitat required to support them. My time in these places has reminded me that we are all connected to each other and the earth.

Battle of the mold

Battle of the mold

Having lived in northern California’s Siskiyou County for the past 16 years, I had pretty much grown accustomed to dry weather. Even when it got wet, it always dried out relatively quickly. So, when I set out on my journey through the Pacific Northwest, I suppose I was a bit clueless about the moisture and humidity I would face. I’ve never been one of those people who hates the rain. In fact, I rather enjoy it–to a point. I made sure my RV was watertight. I bought a brand new rain coat and rain pants. I made sure I bought a camera bag with a rain fly. I even made not one, but two, camera “raincoats.” (You can find instructions for them on Jai Johnson’s blog.) I really thought I was prepared. Then I spent two months in the rain. Yes, two months.

Magical Rainbow Reflection

Okay, so maybe it hasn’t rained every day for the past two months, but certainly is has been rainy more days than not. Thus, when getting things in order to move from Waldport to Bandon, much to my horror, I discovered mold! Truth be told, I had been doing battle with the stuff for weeks. When it’s chilly outside, warm inside, and the humidity is high, condensation is the result. The windows get wet and the water drips down them and settles in the window frames. So, I had been wiping down the windows every day or two and trying to stay ahead of the inevitable mold. So far, so good. But, little did I know, in the cab of the motorhome, which doesn’t see much use other than travel days, the moisture was condensing and running down onto the carpet. Only when clearing out the cab and getting ready to move did I discover the moldy carpet! Ewwwww! Not only that, but I had no time to do anything about it. So, I had to drive from Waldport to Bandon in a cab that was looking like a bagle that sat too long in the cupboard! Ewwwww!

As a result, my first couple days in Bandon were dedicated to the battle of the mold. I am now the proud owner of an electric dehumidifier and a bottle of industrial strength moldicide. Probably overkill, but I never again want to see white fuzz growing inside my motorhome.

Aftermath and Prelude

Once the mold eradication project was completed, I could finally relax and enjoy Bandon. Perfect timing, too, because the rain decided to stop for an hour or two right at sunrise and the light on the ocean was nothing like I have ever seen. Amazing is too mild a word to describe it.

And now I’m thanking my lucky stars that I came here last week because Highway 101 is closed north of Florence due to a mudslide and the Alsea River (which is right next to where I was camped) is rising fast. I hope everyone I met there is safe and dry and I hope this storm lets up before too much damage happens.

Even as I write this latest installment of my adventures on the road, I know that with each new day will come new challenges. But with the challenges also come unexpected rewards. And that’s pretty much what life is all about. I’m still enjoying the good stuff and handling the not so good stuff. In other words, “livin’ the dream.”

Movin’ on

Movin’ on

With less than a week to go in Waldport, Oregon, I can’t help but look back fondly on my stay here. While I can’t really say I’ve stayed anywhere so far that wasn’t good, this place has been the best. If you ever need a place to camp on the central Oregon coast, I highly recommend a stay at Chinook RV Park. Not only is it a great campground with level sites, clean restrooms, and a great doggie play area, but it’s a natural wonder as well. Right on the Alsea River, just a few miles from downtown Waldport, there is more wildlife to be seen here than at some National Wildlife Refuges I’ve been.

The surrounding area is dense with legendary scenery, which is why I picked this location to begin with. There is much, much more here than can been seen even in a month, and I’ve discovered some scenic surprises while I’ve been here.

Of course, I’ve also photographed some familiar locations. All, while working in or around the rain, which is pretty much the norm here this time of year. Over the years I’ve found that rain can make for some unexpectedly wonderful photo ops.

But the most pleasant surprise at this particular location has been the multitude of creatures. Like this harbor seal I spied swimming in the Devil’s Churn at high tide. At first I thought the poor thing must have gotten lost or been washed into the crevice by a strong wave. But, after watching for a while, it became clear that the seal was there because it wanted to be, and it was probably finding something to eat.

And, I don’t even have to get in my car to see wildlife. I can walk a couple hundred yards from my front door and see things like this.

I like it here so much, I considered asking my hosts about staying on for another week or two. But, after some thought, I realized that I’m ready to move on to new sights and new experiences. A month is long enough and now it’s time for me to fly.

And I also realized that in all my time living in Yreka, I never went on a road trip to Bandon. So next week I will say a fond farewell to Waldport and when you hear from me again I will be in Bandon by the Sea. Stay tuned and thanks for stopping by.

Grateful for the gifts

Grateful for the gifts

It occurs to me that each time I go out, in search of the perfect photograph, I receive something precious, although it’s not always the perfect photograph. While my intentions and ideas can be pretty specific, the things I am presented with are much more general.

This realization can change my attitude from disappointment to joy. It can be tricky, to notice the obvious. Especially if you have blinders on. I find it especially disconcerting after I’ve just had some amazing photographic good fortune. Such as the day I went to Takhlakh Lake under a cover of low clouds, with little hope of seeing the famous reflection of Mount Adams–and then it miraculously appeared.

It was easy to be grateful that day. I got what I wanted and what I set out for. And, even a bit extra.

But there are days when I set out with something in mind, and it just doesn’t happen. Like the Mt. Hood Scenic Byway. I envisioned multiple, beautiful vistas of Mt. Hood and autumn colors, and who knows what else. Instead, the clouds rolled in, the weather got cold, and the mountain disappeared. Yet, I saw and experienced a part of Oregon I had not seen before. And it was beautiful and wonderful.

Or, the trip to shoot some lesser known waterfalls on the Washington side of the gorge. Rain and rough gravel roads and “No Trespassing” signs, as well as my own mistakes ensured that I would not come home with any spectacular photographs. Yet, I experienced something unforgettable and wondrous when the spawning salmon at the bottom of one waterfall swam within inches of me–over and over. It was as if they were getting to know me, in the last days of their life, and I felt their spirit and determination. They had reached this pool, at the bottom of a 33 foot waterfall, by swimming hundreds of miles from the Pacific Ocean and this was as far as they could go. I arrived at the same place by driving my car a few miles and walking several hundred feet. It almost felt as if I had cheated. Yet here I was, and here they were.

So there are times when the experience is perfect for photographing and I capture it and share it.

And there are times when the photography takes a back seat and the experience is not captured to share. It’s only mine to savor in my memory. And I know now that this is how it must be and I’ve decided to be okay with that.

So far, this winter is for the birds!

So far, this winter is for the birds!

Just a little play on the expression. Curious as to how this idiom came to be, I looked it up. As it turns out, it is based on the idea that birds eat seed, and seed isn’t worth much. Therefore the saying “for the birds” means worthless or without value. However, in my case, I’ve been finding a lot of value in our feathered friends. In fact, I would go so far as to say, birds are my muse at the moment.

The weather has been dry, dry, dry and they say we are in for a serious drought this summer. There is less snow on Mount Shasta now (in January) than there was in September. With all this bad news, it’s easy to get depressed and lose inspiration. I love to shoot landscapes, but without snow–or even clouds–the landscapes are a bit lackluster. But, instead of taking a break from photography, I’ve changed subject matter. The best thing about it is, all this persistence and practice has started to pay off in terms of better bird images. Also in learning more about behavior and habits so that I can be in the right place at the right time.
