I must be crazy!

I must be crazy!

I’ve been selling prints of my photos for over three years now. It’s no secret to me what people buy. Dramatic landscapes and beautiful flowers sell more than anything else I shoot. Yet I feel compelled to shoot wildlife. Luckily, I have enough of a retirement to provide for my basic needs. And it’s a good thing too, because otherwise I would starve. I’ve just bought a new zoom lens and refurbished camera in order to get better wildlife shots. Am I nuts?

When I go out to a wildlife area, and come back with something like this, I feel like I’ve won the lottery! All the excitement, without the money! It’s just so challenging and fun, I can’t seem to help myself.

Don’t misunderstand, I still want to shoot landscapes, but the wildlife is definitely calling me. So, on the way to my next landscape destination, I find myself planning to pass by as many National Wildlife Refuges as possible. I want to revisit Zion National Park, where I visited in 2011.

So, I’m switching it up. Instead of staying in the same place for two weeks or a month at a time, I will be heading to the desert and only staying for a few days at each stop. I hope to be in the southwest as spring arrives. But I also hope to see some interesting wildlife along the way.

So, friends and fans, stick with me and continue to travel along vicariously, even if I’m crazy. I’ll be following my bliss and we might just see some interesting creatures along the way. At least, that’s what I’m hoping. Then again, maybe I’m just crazy.

Walk Like a Raven

Thanks for being there

Thanks for being there

It’s been four months since I left the security and comfort of a permanent home in favor of a life on the road. I’ve seen some beautiful places and wondrous creatures and even managed to photograph some of it. Some of you have accused me of being brave and even inspiring. But, as I contemplate where in this big country I want to go next, I’m grateful for all the friends who are traveling with me on this journey. I can’t thank you enough for coming along with me virtually, sending me encouragement and praise, and even helping out from a distance sometimes.

Feeling Small

The amount of support I have received from you, my friends, is incredible. And I just want to let you know that I truly appreciate every like, comment, and share of both this blog and my facebook posts. It humbles me when I consider how many people take time out of their busy lives to encourage me to keep doing what I do.

Best of 2014

Best of 2014

Well, it’s that time of year and it seems everyone is reflecting back on the year and doing their “top ten.” So I decided to take a look back at all the photos I took in 2014 and do my own top ten list. It was more difficult than I thought it would be to narrow it down to ten. I realized as I was going through my favorites of the year that many are favorites because of the story behind them. I really wanted this list to be what I consider to be my best work as a photographer, regardless of the story. That gave me an idea to do a series of “stories behind the images.” So this post will focus on (pun intended) what I think are my best ten photographs of the year. And I will continue to post travel stories about my adventures on the road. But look for my new series of the story behind the image in the weeks to come. Don’t forget to subscribe to this page so you get a notification by email whenever I make a new post. 2015 promises to be a very exciting year!

And now, without further adieu, here are my top ten images from 2014.

Autumn at Lower Falls

It’s no surprise to me that many of these images have come from the last four months when I began my life as a vagabond. Since I began traveling full time, I’ve immersed myself in photography and, as a result, I feel as though I’ve really grown as a photographer. That’s not to say I still don’t have much to learn. Far from it. I hope to continue learning and growing for as long as I live. And I hope next year’s top ten puts these to shame!

Number 5. Egret over the River

So as another year passes and a new one begins, my advice to everyone out there is find something you love to do and keep doing it. There is no surer way to find happiness and satisfaction! Happy New Year and here’s to an even better 2015!

Sacred Places and Arrogant People

Sacred Places and Arrogant People

(6/14/2016) UPDATE: “Casey Nocket, 23, of San Diego was sentenced by U.S. Magistrate Judge Sheila Oberto in Fresno to 200 hours community service and two years probation. Oberto banned Nocket while she’s on probation from visiting lands managed by the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.”

You can read the whole story here.

Having been fortunate enough to visit several national parks and monuments, as well as many state parks over the past few weeks, you must have known I would have an opinion about the young woman from upstate New York who recently went on a vandalism spree in national parks of the west. If you haven’t seen the story, this is the most recent update (From Modern Hiker). What troubles me most, is that she’s not the only person who feels entitled to deface nature. I’ve noticed more and more graffiti/vandalism in natural places in the last several years. The thing that makes this story so reprehensible, is the level of arrogance expressed by this woman who proudly posts her vandalism on Instagram and calls it art. I will not be mentioning her name in this article, nor will I be posting any photos of her vandalism, because my feeling is that she’s received quite enough attention already and I will not be adding to her ill-gotten fame. Instead, I will add some of my recent photos of places that haven’t (yet) been marred by graffiti.

The Reward

There are good reasons why what she has done is against the law, and I sincerely hope that those charged with enforcing the law will see to it that her selfish behavior carries an appropriate penalty. There seems to be an attitude, among some, that everything that exists is there for the taking. That if you pay an entrance fee, or even just make the effort to go somewhere, you can do whatever you want. Never mind the next person who will visit after you, just go on ahead and paint your mark on it. And it’s that attitude that is slowly destroying whatever is left on this planet that could be considered “natural.” The thing is, these parks belong to us all, not any one of us individually. Millions of people visit these places every year. If everyone had the attitude of this woman, there wouldn’t be a single bit of them without a mark on it.

Perfect Autumn Waterfall

I’ve read opinions of people who say “what’s the big deal?” “so she painted some rocks, so what?” The thing these people don’t understand is the spiritual connection with the natural world. It’s the incredible humility that comes from putting yourself in a position to realize just how insignificant you are in the vast universe. It’s impossible to explain and at the same time, I don’t need to explain it because if you’ve felt it, you know exactly what I’m talking about. For me, and many people I know, nature is our temple, our place of worship. I doubt this woman would walk into a cathedral and paint her graffiti on it, yet that’s exactly what she’s done in my eyes. I realize that I’m not going to change the opinion of anyone who thinks this kind of behavior is okay, but I feel compelled to express how offensive this is to me, and how important it is to actively discourage it with the imposition of negative consequences. Hasn’t the human race already marred the natural world enough? Shouldn’t places that have been set aside to remain as natural as possible be protected from those who would scrawl all over them?

The Chute

I believe that nature’s beauty can absolutely inspire creativity. If the desire to make art comes to you as a result of visiting a natural wonder, that’s not a bad thing. But please make your art in a way that doesn’t tarnish the place that inspired it. Even if you don’t feel the reverence that I do for places like these, at least have some respect. “Take only pictures, leave only footprints.” It really is that simple.

Wildlife Photography is like gambling

Wildlife Photography is like gambling

Once in a while, you hit a jackpot, and that’s what keeps you hooked. I had one of those jackpot days at the Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge recently. It all started when I pulled into the parking lot and got out of my car.

Good Omen; Buteo jamaicensis; regal; raptor; bird of prey; Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge; Washington; wa; Columbia River Gorge; NWR; red tailed hawk; redtail; fly; flight; soar; wild; wildlife; bird; nature; natural; in; and; the; a; on; over; to; of; with; under; above; against; Loree Johnson

Good Omen

Before I even reached the beginning of the trail, this red tailed hawk showed up as if to welcome me. It flew directly over my head and I barely had time to aim my camera. As I began to make my way down the mile-long trail, I spotted a Northern Harrier hunting in the marsh. I watched it for a while, hoping it would fly within range of my lens, but since it didn’t, I continued down the trail. I reached a bridge that went across a creek in a wooded glen. I noticed a disturbance in the water and stopped to see what might emerge.

Muskrat

It was a first for me to see a wild muskrat and it conjured up memories of that old Captain and Tennille song. After making my way slowly through the wooded area, on alert for more creatures, I came to a bridge over the end of a shallow lake. Out in the lake was a great blue heron. I kept my eye on it while I crossed to the other side of the bridge where the light was better. I saw it holding something in it’s beak and shaking it. It took a little while before I realized it had a snake!

Snake Falls Prey to Blue Heron

I stayed there watching the spectacle until the bird finally flew away with its prize. At this point I thought, well, this has been a good day. I didn’t hope or expect to see anything as exciting. So, at the next viewpoint with a bench, I sat down to have a drink of water and take in the beautiful view of the peak of Mount Hood rising up over the walls of the Columbia River Gorge. Just as I was about to attempt a landscape photograph with no tripod and a telephoto lens, I noticed a large bird soaring in the distance. When I looked through the lens, I couldn’t believe I was watching a bald eagle flying right in front of my view of the mountain.

Bald Eagle and Mount Hood

It was just about then that I knew this day was one of those “jackpots” of wildlife photography. And I hadn’t even reached the end of the trail yet. So on I walked. When I reached the end of the trail, I saw something that finally made me realize why it’s called the Gibbons Creek Art Trail. There are works of art all along the trail. I had been so captivated by the wildlife, I barely noticed the art.

And now it was time to walk back on the same trail I had just traversed. Thinking I must have seen it all by now, I walked a bit more quickly. But, I slowed down on the way through the wooded glen. As I looked carefully through the tall grass, I spotted something that looked like an interesting piece of wood on the other side of the creek. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be an American Bittern staying very still in hopes of not being seen.

American Bittern Spotlighted

I know first hand how difficult it is to find and photograph these birds because they lived in a tree in my back yard in Yreka for years and I never got one good photograph of them. By now, I was like an addict looking for my next fix. I hadn’t had such a good wildlife day since winter at the Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge.

Then, just a bit farther up the trail, I saw this.

Seeing Double

A beautiful doe. But wait, what’s that behind her? A young buck hiding in the tall grass. I saw much more that day, including Northern Flickers, Stellers Jays, and American Kestrels. If you want to see them all, click on the Galleries tab at the top of the page and look through the What’s New gallery. So now that I’ve had a good dose of wildlife photography, I’m ready for more landscapes. And being in the Columbia River Gorge, beautiful landscapes abound. But don’t worry, like a compulsive gambler, I will come back to wildlife eventually–because I’m hooked.
